Queer Reality Design Document

I worked as part of a four person team in my senior year to create a VR experience in Unity. Our team project was titled The Queer Reality, and we focused on highlighting the struggles of people in the LGBTQ+ community through immersive media. I was the technical lead, responsible for video and audio development and for creating a virtual reality framework. However, I wore multiple hats during the project, working on every part, from the design process to filming 360-degree videos.

Our project consists of a short VR experience where the user takes on the perspective of someone in the LGBTQ+ community. They proceed through a scripted experience intended to empathise with some of the hardships that they face on a daily basis. It features an immersive 360 video plays that is controlled with the user's head movements. Users can make choices at specific intervals that lead to different outcomes.

The project was created in Unity, coded in C# and run on an Oculus Quest 2. Videos were filmed on a Insta 360 Video Camera, and edited in Adobe Premiere.

Virtual Reality in Unity

As the technical lead, my responsibilities included finding a way to make our idea - a Virtual Reality experience - into reality. My accomplishments included connecting the VR framework existing in Unity to the Oculus Quest, allowing us to run our project on a headset remotely, and configuring 360 cameras and footage so that the audio and video we recorded worked in Unity. I also designed and coded all of the interactions in the project, which worked through a UI.
